Pleasures Evermore: The Life-Changing Power of Enjoying God
Published in Paperback by NavPress (05 April, 2000)
Author: Sam Storms
Average review score:

Life-changing!!
I have read this book several times as I've led others through it. I've seen lives deeply impacted by the radical approach to pleasing God that Sam Storms presents in Pleasures Evermore.

Just a glimpse... The key to your holiness is pursuing pleasure in God. When your heart is satisfied in God's all-sufficient love and grace, you will not be lured by the fleeting pleasures of sin. "But I thought we were supposed to live for the glory of God?" Yes, Exactly right. As John Piper says, "God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him."

I highly recommend this book you. Read it slowly. Let the implications to your life sink in. You'll be forever changed. Much of the church is stuck in a man-centered effort trying to please God. Don't try harder, ENJOY MORE!

OUTSTANDING
Sam Storms has a vibrant relationship with the Lord & it radiates through every page in this book. He is a disciple of John Piper who wrote THE book on the subject (Desiring God) and Sam Storms explains in a slightly different voice the joys of knowing and enjoying Almighty God. This book will deepen your desire for God.

Point of Power: A Relationship With Your Soul
Published in Paperback by Harper Collins - UK (April, 1995)
Author: Kay Snow-Davis
Average review score:

POINT OF POWER BY KAY SNOW-DAVIS
This book is absolutely a wonderful book. I have only read 1/4 of the bood and already see the results in my life. I am finding my "point of power" and it is totally exciting!

Point of Power: A Relationship With Your Soul
Point of Power changed my life. I was given insight into patterns of behavior in myself that I had labeled 'wrong' because I didn't understand that the way I see life, the way I perceive situations and people, the way my mind works is unique to me and supports how I am in the world. Growing up, getting through school, entering the workforce --- these are all places we are encouraged to 'sit still, be quiet, and pay attention,' yet that may not be our natural rhythm at all!

Point of Power (POP) offers 4 natural rhythms and we embody all of them. One or two, sometimes three of these rhythms, are the true expression of our naturalness:

Root: the Sustainer. The Root part of you is your foundation. Quiet, contemplative, efficient, not a lot of chitchat here! If your POP is Root you may be considered aloof, uncommunicative, a stick in the mud. Yet when you have something to say, it is powerful and to the point. You are grounded and enduring, and support the movement of life force throughout the physical and subtle bodies. The Root POP is closely in touch with Form, that which you can hold, weigh, measure. Root is highly kinesthetic, in touch with the senses. Out of balance, this part of you may be rigid and withdrawn.

Trunk: the Maintainer. Like the trunk of the tree, this rhythm is reliable, strong, dependable. The Trunk POP is excellent at maintaining order and systems, keeping all the ducks in order, following the rules. This is the part of you that stops at the red light and goes at the green light, the powerful aspect of our entire society that makes regulations so we can all be working together in some very critical areas. The Trunk relates most happily with Form and loves to put information together and complete a task. Out of balance you may be over-critical and demanding, and you may limit your possibilities by resisting change.

Branch: the Translator. This was one of the great breakthroughs for me - I translate Formless ideas into Form easily and effectively, and I love starting new projects. This seems like a great thing, yet I'm not fond of maintaining a project once it is successfully underway, and this has cost me in the self-esteem area. Now that I understand it is my naturalness to bring one idea in, get it going, then leave it behind for the next new idea, I can organize myself in a way that honors that rhythm rather than judging myself as being wrong because I don't 'follow through.' Whew! That was a relief! The Branch POP CREATES order and systems (rather than maintaining them, which the Trunk does so well), and is flexible, open to change, and versatile. Out of balance the Branch may be inconsistent, indecisive, controlling or manipulative.

Leaf: the Visionary. This was the other aspect of my breakthrough. The Leaf lives in the world of Formless - idea after idea after idea courses through the Visionary mind - far too many ideas to ever be manifested in 'real life.' Yet the Leaf sees the entire process of creation, from idea to full implementation, in his or her mind's eye and then sees that it is a done deal, even though there is 'nothing to show' in Form. One of the primary criticisms of the Leaf Point of Power is "She has all these ideas but she never DOES anything!" The Leaf POP initiates and creates movement, they are the idea people, the inventors, those among us who may be considered to be 'out on the fringe.' That is their most natural rhythm! Out of balance they may be impractical and impatient, they may judge and criticize, be impatient and unrealistic.

We often label ourselves (and are labeled by others) as less-than because we believe we 'should' do what we're told, think like everyone else, sit still and be quiet... and that is not everyone's naturalness! This book offers a safe place to explore who you really are and how you relate to others and the world around you by giving you permission to operate in life with your own natural rhythm.

What a blessing it is to understand and acknowledge myself and those I interact with from a place of compassion and understanding rather than judgment. Point of Power offers the option of recognizing and honoring both yourself and family members, co-workers, friends. It's a great gift to allow people to be themselves. It is an especially great gift to be able to allow me to be me, knowing that I am OK just as I am.

Highly recommended!

Politics in Black and White: Race and Power in Los Angeles
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (May, 1993)
Author: Raphael J. Sonenshein
Average review score:

Great political history of the Bradley coalition
I enjoyed this analysis of LA politics, seen through the rise of minorities in LA politics, specifically the Bradley coalition. His work, about LA, is important because LA is important. The lessons that can be learned from LA's successful minority political coalition, and the lessons Sonenshein draws, can and should be used to measure the success of other big city racial politics. And I'm not just saying this because he was my professor at UCLA.

A must-read for anyone interested in racial politics
Sonenshein's dead-on analysis and clear writing make this book an essential for anyone studying politics in America. There's a reason he was given the APSA award. Not reading it is a travesty and you should be ashamed of yourself. And I'm not just saying that because he's my uncle.

Popular Science Complete Book of Power Tools

More Power To Your Elbow
Okay,so like me a few weeks before Christmas you marked up all the power tools you'd like in a trade catalogue and left it lying around the house. Again, if you were lucky like me, you got most of them!! Herewith the first problem, how do I use them? Most of them I only felt at ease with plugging in to the nearest socket without switching on. I searched high and low for publications for each tool particularly aimed at the beginner but with no success. If you're in the same boat then this book is for YOU. Covering stationary and portable power tools displayed in easy to read sections full of advice on use and safety, all liberally doused with photographs and illustrations. Even for the more accomplished among us I can see this book being a valuable reference source. It is in itself "a TOOL without a motor" but nonetheless full of "the POWER of knowledge".

Power Woodworking Tools
I think this is an excellant book for someone who wishes to know if woodworking is for him/her. I have purchased several more specific books , such as routers and their applications, but this book (which was a birthday present), provides a broad overview for someone who wants to know the basics of a tool which will be enough to get him/her started. . . If only Amazon.com would bring the price down, I would send it to friends & family. . . In my dreams. . .

Power

Terrific Stuff!
This really ought to be brought back into print. Sure, one of the notions in the anthology (cold fusion) is hokum, but that doesn't stop it being an intensely good read. And the point about civisatin being based on energy density is just brilliant.

Power, power everywhere.....
A very thought-provoking anthology. All the stories turn on energy(power), and how to generate it, keep it, and use it.Short nonfiction articles give a well thought precis on alternate forms of energy. Make sure you read the stories 'Snowball', and 'Roachstompers'. 'Cracking-good' reads, in and of themselves.

Power and Compassion: Working with Difficult Adolescents and Abused Parents
Published in Paperback by Guilford Press (20 January, 1999)
Authors: Jerome Price and Jerome A. Price
Average review score:

The best of 5 books I've read about defiant teens
Yes, I've read 5 books cover to cover. I know this book was written for professional counselors, but as a parent who has spent many hours in counselors offices, this book is invaluable. If you're paying attention, when reading this book, you can recognise whether your counselor is helping you, or wasting your time. When parents are honestly being emotionally abused, they need to be told, and supported in their efforts to take "decisive and responsible action to help their children" as Dr. Price says in his book. If I'd had this book a year ago, I would not have wasted time on a psychiatrist who only served as an abusive teen's good buddy. If you are a parent, another good book on this subject is "The Defiant Child" by Dr. Douglas Riley. Riley's book spends some time on younger children, but if your child is 14, it's not too late to put his book to good use. For parents of teenagers, it is really too late for you to buy "The Explosive Child," by Ross W. Greene. Greene's book is great for parents of younger children. I do recommend Gregory Bodenhamer's book "Parent in Control." but to make his ideas work, parents really have to have some backbone and the backing of others and the community. Trouble is that many of us have the problems we have with our children because we had no backbone in the first place, or our authority has been undermined for too long. We need assistance and support, not blame in order to turn things around for our children. I recommend "Power and Compassion" above all five books I've read for defiant children.

IMMENSELY USEFUL, BRIDGES USUAL DISPUTES
The most useful book I've found in 25 years' work with these families, and in families with milder aggression. Kids really get better. Many illustrations help adults understand why they quarrel so much over these kids, and give them real hope and specific tools to guide them wisely. For therapists, parents, and teachers caught in arguments about "tough love/accountability" vs "understanding the cause" strategies, this is a necessary guide about when and how to utilize both strategies, where they are likely to make mistakes.
